When they break, they have no residual strength and if they are supported pointwise or only on one side, such as a parapet with lateral support below, then the "wet blanket effect" occurs and there is a risk of injury. It is advisable, if from the point of view of load resistance is sufficient, in multi-layered glazing in such applications, to combine the thermally toughened glass with a thermally reinforced glass pane, which in the event of breakage, breaks into larger pieces and will therefore remain in place after breakage and until removal.
Multi-layer glazing is commonly used in applications where security is a top priority, such as car windscreens, skylights and high-rise buildings. They can also provide increased sound insulation and thermal performance when combined with low-e coatings.
